According to football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t The Sun), Manchester United have offered to pay a whopping sum of €65M in securing the services of AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer transfer window.
Tchoumeni has grown to become one of the brightest talents in French football, earning plaudits for his performances in the middle of the park for both Monaco and the France national team. Only 22, the player has proven that age is not a limitation to his abilities.
His fine displays on the pitch have seen him attract attention from a lot of clubs ahead of the impending opening of the transfer window, with United already in pole position to land the sensational Frenchman to bolster their midfield.
The midfield has been a weak link for the Manchester side for years, and they are yet to find a player that is capable of filling in the gaps. A lynchpin in the middle of the park is a necessity for the team, and perhaps Tchouameni could be the one to revitalise the squad.
It won’t be easy to sign the France international this summer, as Di Marzio has claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen to sign the Monaco man for themselves. The Gunners currently have Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny running the midfield, while Thomas Partey remains on the sidelines through injury, while Liverpool seek to further improve their options at the middle of the park.
United will have to slug it out wih their fellow English sides for Tchouameni’s signature at the end of the season, and both clubs could be involved in a transfer tug-of-war for the player who will set them back by at least the figures offered by United. For a player of his quality and age, that may prove to be a bargain in the long term.
At Old Trafford, Fred and Scott McTominay are arguably the Ralf Rangnick’s first-choice pairing in midfield. However, with Erik Ten Hag’s impending arrival, neither player is guaranteed a place in Man Utd midfield.
Furthermore, more senior stars like Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic’s exits from the club in the summer make it necessary for the Red Devils to look towards completing Tchouameni’s signature. While the former seems to be running down his contract with the team when it expires at the end of the season, the latter has announced his impending departure from the side.
the team needs a player who can prove to be a long-term investment for the club and shoulder the responsibility of running the midfield. Tchouameni has proven exactly that at Monaco, and could very well be the star United have been searching for.
The Frenchman could very well be Pogba’s long-term successor for Les Blues in the coming years, and in the summer, he could also act as Pogba’s successor for the Red Devils. Only time will tell if the 22-year-old picks the Manchester side over Arsenal in the coming months.
