Erik Ten Hag is seemingly relentless in landing Barça midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer despite the Dutchman’s relunctance to join his former gaffer at Old Trafford, citing he’s happy to remain at Barça.
According to The Sun(h/t The Metro), Manchester United have refused to give up on Frenkie De Jong amid growing concerns regarding the move. The Red Devils have been accelerating their attempts to sign the midfielder as soon as possible.
Barcelona are willing to let De Jong leave Camp Nou having reached agreement with with United for a fee around €75m plus €10m add ons earlier this week.
The board is well aware of the manager’s interests and they have gone out of their way to smoothing the deal. Manchester United CEO, Richard Arnold, and football director, John Murtough were spotted in Barcelona as they were having talks with the Blaugrana officials.
However, even after making moves, the Red Devils are stuck in a dilemma. It has been known that the Dutch midfielder recently bought a new home in Barcelona. He and his girlfriend are known to be comfortable in their current setup and would resist moving anywhere else.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has recently downplayed the rumours claiming that the club is being forced to sell the player. However, the club will struggle to register new players only if they fulfil the financial fair play rules.
It has been claimed that the player has also informed his teammates that it would be impossible for him to leave the club. One of the reasons would be the lack of Champions League football and inconsistent performances from Manchester United.
Now,the Spanish press are trying to create more confusion by stating that the player will be staying. The Manchester United board are convinced that the player is open to joining the club and are refusing to give up their efforts.
Erik Ten Hag has explained the dire need for much more quality in the middle of the park after two consecutive pre-season wins over Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.
According to the former Ajax boss, De Jong posseses the ability to ensure the fluidity he desires from his sides.
“He’s very good with the ball, he also likes to maintain possession for the team, and fantastic vision of course ” he said. Quizzed on the relentless pursuit of the 25-year-old despite indications from his camp suggesting he’s happy at Barcelona, Ten Hag disclosed there’s actual progress in talks with the midfielder, contrary to media reports.
“He’s young and ambitious, and of course he wants to win trophies anywhere he is. This club represents the opportunity to achieve a whole lot. We’re still speaking and moving up on discussions, and so the club is focused on our project of building a better squad to compete against the big sides in the league and Europe.” Ten Hag said.
The 52-year-old is doing a fair job in making sure the club signs the right players and does not repeat similar mistakes again.
Ajax star Lisandro Martinez has joined Christian Eriksen, and Tyrell Malacia as the club’s new recruits this summer.
Whether de Jong will be the fourth name on that list remains to be seen. One of the best young midfielders in Europe, de Jong has a huge decision to make in the coming days.
